Hindsight: `Housewives' Edie Britt, 1 of a kind

Edie, the ageless party girl of "Desperate Housewives," made an electric exit Sunday from ABC's drama — she was fatally jolted after her car ran into a power pole and expired beautifully in front of a Wisteria Lane crowd.
"I died just like I had lived, as the complete and utter center of attention," Edie, serving as ghostly narrator to her passing, smugly informed us in a voiceover.
As neighbors Susan, Lynette, Bree, Gabrielle and Mrs. McCluskey set off on a road trip to deliver the bad news and Edie's cremated remains to her son, they passed the time by sharing memories and wisecracks about the dearly departed.
When Lynette (Felicity Huffman) is chastised for peeking inside the urn at Edie's ashes, she tartly replies, "Or what, I'll turn to stone?"
Later, Mrs. McCluskey (Kathryn Joosten) muses about why Edie would want to be cremated instead of being "pumped full of chemicals and preserved."
"Isn't that what she did for the last 15 years?" Lynette says.  In flashbacks, the friends recalled how Edie provided a loving hand — or kick in the pants — at a difficult time in their lives.
And when they end up scattering her remains over Wisteria Lane, each offering a one-word tribute, Susan (Teri Hatcher), insists on four: "One of a kind," she offers.  And I think that is the best way to sum up Edie's character.  I know that I personally feel that Nicollette Sheridan was "one of a kind" in this role and with it being TV land I'm still holding out hope for a shocking return of Edie Brit.
Perhaps Edie is really not dead.  We didn't see her body we only know that David had her cremated.  The same guy who was about to kill her but then stopped.  What's to say that she's not off in a coma somewhere to be dragged out later?  And was it just me or did anyone find it strange that Edie, who Mrs. McCluskey said "loved her son" had not left him anything in a will?
If I were writing this show I would indeed bring back Edie and/or a sister (perhaps Nicollette as a Raven haired sister?) because this show needs some real sugar and spice and with Edie that spells NICE!  What say you all?

  1. The reasons why Edie died is because of cost cutting, and it seems that Sheridan and Cherry didn't get along anymore, so he prefered to get rid of her rather than several smaller roles. I think that's a mistake. Edie was a great character and she will be missed, but at the same time he never really used her fully, so... But I'll sure be way less excited to watch the show. getting more Edie has always lured me to Wisteria Lane!

  2. DH does flashbacks better than any other show and last night's show was no disappointment in that regard. Great ep despite the fact we lost Edie which will be a huge loss. Edie was the voice of reason to these Stepford Wives & could always be counted on to get to the core of things. If they were gonna get rid of one of them, this was the wrong one to lose. Goodbye Edie - hope you'll be back for more reflective flashbacks. If only it had been Susan....

  3. That was probably the worse episode I have ever seen of Desperate Housewives. This show you used to be edgy and cutting edge. Now it's just tired and unimaginative. Unfortunately it has tapered into "Accoriding to Jim" quality. I don't think that Marc Cherry knows what he's doing anymore and killing of Edie is, well, just desperate.

  4. It was a wonderful, but sad, episode. I agree that there was no real reason to kill off Edie storywise, so it's unfortunate that off-camera conflicts were responsible. She was a hoot!
I also agree that Katherine was conspicuous by her absence during the car ride. Why on earth has she been so rarely seen this season? A perfunctory scene here & there doesn't do much to reinforce her now-close friendship with each of the other ladies on the Lane. Anyone know what the story is about that?

  5. And anyone care to explain how Dave was like the only one missing from the circle of death? How do you explain that? How does he explain that. Show is dying and Nicolette was smart to get out.

  7. Last night's episode was yet another reason why Desperate Housewives is still my favorite show. Edie's sendoff was poignant, funny, and full of surprising revelations.
Nicolette Sheridan has never been a great actress by any stretch of the imagination, but her performance last night was truly memorable.
A great sendoff to a truly memorable character.
    Rest in peace, Edie!

  8. You know she may really not be dead well she is but she can be back on WL...b/c like Marc has mentioned if they do a season in between last season and this season she will be alive. Thats 5yrs to play with...and 5 years that Edie was alive!
She will be missed but um i want this ***** mystery solved...its the slowest ever. And who knows maybe she has more to do with this whole ordeal than we think...

  9. If what I read is true, all the Housewives except one, depart one way or another by the end of the series. So, Edie is the first. I didn't get why they were carrying the urn with them in the car (other than permitting the tales to evolve). I think Edie and Mary Alice having voice-over discussions in upcoming episodes would be grand!!!!

  10. I think it was a proper send-off for Edie, and I did get teared-up at the end. But, I also don't see the point of getting rid of Edie. She is (or rather, was) my favorite character, and I will miss her. The show won't be the same without her, that's for sure. I guess all we can hope for is that she'll narrate the show from now on, which I don't expect to happen.

  11. That was the worst DH episode I've ever seen! They ruined the character of Edie after she was dead by turning her into something she was not with all those unbelievable stories. Hated it!

  12. What was missing was ENTERTAINMENT! I was so bored, I even started to doze off. After the second "story" - I realized it was the same concoted storyline from the Eli Scruggs episode, and that one was WAY better. We need some new writers and a better storyline/mystery quickly....or Housewives will soon be falling out of my tv lineup...

  13. A month without any new episodes and then they use the exact same format as the Beau Bridges episode?!? Complete with little moral lessons for the viewer to learn? I don't like that they make her into somewhat of a saint after how many years of watching her behave badly and have seemingly no conscience?

  14. I liked it as an individual episode but find myself with several questions.
Why kick the character off Wisteria Lane last year, jump forward 5 years so you can keep the character, only to kill her off. Didn't she hit Orson with the car before she wrecked? No mention of him in present time. Finally I can see why everyone turned their backs on her last year but the way they rewrote history I can't imagine Lynette turning her back on her if she was instrumental in her cancer recovery.

  15. All I could think at the end of this episode was, and now every day these people are going to inhale Edie dust. Am i alone on that one?

  16. I will never forget when Susan hit Edie with her station wagon while she was in her super-***** shorts and roller skates! Yes, I will miss Edie more than I guess I realize now. If you ever REALLY wanted to know something, Edie was the place to go to get to the bottom of things. Nicollette deserves her own show somewhere, somehow!

  17. Didn't like it. If they had never done the Eli Scruggs episode, this might have had an impact on me. Instead I found this repetitive narrative shockingly lazy and insulting. Edie was a great character. The ladies' continuous digs at her started to border on tasteless. I didn't like the Susan backstory at all (it contradicts an episode from season 1) and it didn't make sense that they would ALL go to see the boy- whom they barely know themselves. Lynette's story was the strongest.

  18. Overall, I thought it was good send off. I thought I didn't care that she was leaving but I actually teared up a couple times. Lynette and Gaby's memories were the best. There are questions but they'll be answered eventually. Katherine wasn't living on the Lane when Edie moved in so they wouldn't have known each other as long I don't think. Who knows. That character is wasted too. I'll stick it out but I'm ready for these story lines to wrap up this season.

  19. The "Eli Scruggs" episode didn't enter my mind once as I watched this one. Both were excellent, but loyal viewers like me have enjoyed a love/hate relationship with Edie (mostly love) throughout several years of drama on Wisteria Lane. There is an emotional investment involved, and one that paid off very well in this episode, even though it is unfortunate that Edie will no longer be around.
Some people are still nitpicking about such minor things with this show--but this was a great send-off!

  20. It was a nice send off for Nicollette. I can't help wonder why Dave didn't get the ashes. I can see why he would want the women to tell her son (and take him the ashes) but since he didn't want them, shouldn't they have gone back to her husband, Dave?
...and even if the spread them around the neighborhood, seems like Dave would have been a part of that and maybe dumped some on her own house? I know...petty...but it bugged me all night! :)

  21. It's a shame that we didn't see that level of depth from Edie's character throughout the series. Why couldn't Edie have been super hot and super sexy and still be a woman of substance?

  22. Word has it the Edie (Nicolette) cleaned out her trailer and "stole" over $30,000 worth of goods. Go Edie.

  23. a very silly mistake to get rid of her, she may not have been front and centre like the other woman, but the dynamics have changed now and that should never be done to a show that didn't need fixing (or to get rid of anyone). make my words, you will notice her gone, it's a crack in the foundations that made the base for Desperate Housewives!

  24. I will miss Edie. Her character was a welcome break from the goodie two shoes Wisteria Lane residents. I wish they had utilized her more over the years. I agree that Bree's story was pretty ridiculous, only because I can't see Edie visiting the husband of a woman who shunned her. Alhough, Edie would want the attention of other inmates and to show herself off, I suppose, but that negates the heartfelt gesture. Best line "I loved him enough to send him away." Edie - Second best line: "Edie would appreciate you're ruining this moment." -to Susan, who said she needed four words instead of one.

  25. ''Sexy.''
    ''Perceptive.''
    ''Strong.''
    ''Beautiful.''
    ''One of a kind.''

Could also be a way of describing Nicollette Sheridan. She was wonderful in that role and to be honest I don't think the show will ever be the same without her. I understand budget cutting and all but for the love of God - Marc Cherry if you are listening "BRING HER BACK!"
